Yamba Writers' Festival cancelled

LOW numbers have forced the organisers of the Yamba Writers' Festival to cancel the event.

It would have been the festival's second year.

Organiser Graham Lees said they followed their usual marketing strategy, but could not come up with enough pre-sale bookings.

"We did everything in our power to create interest," Mr Lees said.

"But we had to make the call.

"We have discussed this in previous years.

"We can't proceed unless we get the pre-sales."

Mr Lees said he believed the recent bad weather was among the factors that affected interest.

"Basically circumstances beyond our control," he said.

"That applies to all events.

"You can't help all the parameters."

However, Mr Lees said this year would not be the last paged turned on the festival

"I'm sure we will try next year," he said.

"We were happy with last year's numbers."

Last year the two-day festival featured a host of local authors, including Peter Watt, Cathie Whitmore, Kristina Olsson, David Hallett, Melissa Beit, Robert Drewe, Dr Moya Costello, Alice Greenup and Zacharey Jane.

The festival caters to both experienced and novice writers.
