Mullum to Bruns Paddle draws 1050 entrants

FORECASTED wet and windy weather didn't deter a massive field of 1050 paddlers taking part in Sunday's 2015 Mullum2Bruns Paddle.

Mullum2Bruns spokeswoman Wendy Champagne said paddlers had the wind behind them and the current against them as they raced on the Brunswick River from Mullumbimby to Brunswick Heads.

"Surf Life Saving legend Karla Gilbert won the women's division of the Print Rescue Stand Up Paddleboard challenge in 73.48 and rising star of the SUP (stand up paddleboard) circuit, 20 year-old Jake Jensen, started off his international season with a winning time of 69.47 in a very close finish for the men's division," she said.

"About 45 members of the Brisbane SUP club came down for the event and placed in both challenges - a third for Oliver Murphy-Kurth in the men's SUP and a second for Kelly Jury in the women."

The open paddle field was extremely competitive, she said.

"Currumbin kayaker Tim Stenlake took line honours in a blistering 51.02 race to the finish. Haydn Clarke was second," Ms Champagne said.

"Xavier College students Harrison and Connor Murphy kept up the pressure on the leaders, with Harrison placing in the top five, after only a handful of times ever paddling a kayak."

The event raised money for the Brunswick Heads Visitors Centre, Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club and Brunswick Marine Rescue.
