Pacific Hwy upgrades not 'significant' enough: report card

PROGRESS on the Pacific Hwy duplication is good, but it's not good enough.

That's how the NRMA has summed up the New South Wales O'Farrell Government's contribution to the state's troubled road network since the 2011 election.

In a two-year report card released Tuesday, the NRMA noted that while a $1.54 billion commitment to the upgrades in the 2012-12 budget was "significant", it was not enough to meet the 2016 deadline.

Projects which the NRMA called for in the lead-up to the election were given a green, amber or red score based on the action taken by the State Government in response.

The Pacific Hwy duplication was rated in the middle.

An NRMA spokesman explained that the score showed that "while we are on the right path, we're not there yet".

He called on all levels of government to "up the ante on of the most dangerous roads in the county".

In general, there was more green than red.

Directing fines back into road safety, the introduction of compulsory fuel pricing boards and cracking down on drink and drug-driving were welcomed as was the announcement on Sydney's much needed Westconnex road links.

NRMA President Wendy Machin said the next two years would be critical as drivers would ultimately judge the O'Farrell Government's performance based on the delivery of its promises.
