Ozboks take out Byron Sevens

FORMER Wollongbar-Alstonville winger Alex Gibbon was part of the winning A-grade men's team at the 25th annual Byron Bay Rugby Union Sevens tournament.

Gibbon turned out for the Canberra-based Ozboks team as they beat competition regulars Sunnybank 29-26 in the final.

They were trailing 26-24 with only two minutes remaining as they scored right at the death.

Ozboks also beat the Brazilian national sevens team in the major semi-final.

They shared the celebrations with The Samoans, who beat the Australian Services team in the women's A-grade final.

Brazil joined the tournament for the first time this year with teams from Fiji and New Zealand competing.

Far North Coast clubs Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Lismore and Wollongbar-Alstonville also entered teams.

The host club also had a women's team for the first time in a number of years.
