Breaching humpback whale lands on top of moving boat

A HUMPBACK whale breached off Fraser Island and landed on top of a moving passenger boat.

A Hervey Bay Water Police spokesman confirmed the incident happened last Saturday and no one was injured.

"It appeared the whale breached as the boat was passing by and it landed on top of the boat roughly in the area of Wathumba," the spokesman said.

"It's just one of those things - an occurrence where things were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"But it is a timely reminder with whales in the area for boaties to be vigilant and aware and keep a good lookout."

The boat's fibreglass was damaged on its right side, its rear canopy was torn and frame bent, and black blubber could be seen where the whale came into contact with the vessel.

The Chronicle spoke to the owner of the boat who wanted to remain anonymous.

He said it was an experience he was unlikely to forget any time soon.
