Rocky's water runner-up for Queensland's top drop

ROCKHAMPTON tap water has narrowly missed claiming the title of Queensland's top drop.

Facing off against five other regional finalists, the beef capital came in a very close second at the 2014 Orica Australia Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test.

The grand final was held at the Institute of Public Works Engineers Queensland state conference in Caloundra yesterday.

The quality of water in the Fitzroy River has come under scrutiny in the past, particularly its salinity levels and mine water releases following the floods.

But qldwater CEO Dave Cameron said Richmond Shire Council only just pipped Rockhampton to take the honours, with Bundaberg coming in third.

The Rockhampton sample was taken from the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant.

Rockhampton Regional Council's water committee chairman, Councillor Greg Belz (pictured) said he was proud of the great work undertaken by Fitzroy River Water (FRW).

"FRW's water treatment operators work hard 24 hours a day to provide a great quality product to their customers, so receiving second place in the state for taste is a huge credit to their efforts," Cr Belz said.

"The Fitzroy River is the primary water source for Rockhampton and Gracemere residents with treatment taking place at the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant using conventional treatment processes including flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination before distribution.

"I would like to congratulate the team at FRW for receiving second place and for maintaining a high quality drinking water supply for our Region, not only at the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant but also at the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant."
