Our dirt road danger

IT MAY take a tragedy before something is done about Lillian Rock Rd, according to Alex Kennedy.

Mr Kennedy said the dirt road had a number of dangerous bends, including an extreme hairpin corner which wound around a narrow stretch of road near his home.

He said it was just a matter of time before a serious accident occurred and his worst fear was it would involve one of several school buses which use the road each weekday.

Mr Kennedy said one of the corners was so sharp and steep the bus could easily topple over.

"It's the worst road in Australia," he said

Mr Kennedy said he had been told one of the school buses had lost traction on a bend and two of its wheels had gone off the edge of a sheer drop, although The Northern Star was unable to confirm this

Last year, the bus route between Barkers Vale and Nimbin, which travels along Lillian Rock Rd, was one of 37 Northern Rivers routes on a list of 300 other unsafe routes across the state.

Rainbow Ridge Steiner School is situated on the road and its administrator Cristina Rubsamen said some of the parents whose children rode on the bus were worried.

The children often arrived at school after the harrowing bus ride shaken and with bus drivers having to concentrate solely on driving in such dangerous conditions they were unable to monitor the children's behaviour, she said.

Ms Rubsamen said the school had contacted the Kyogle Council about the road but nothing had been done.

"It's an ongoing problem. It's narrow and it's dirt," she said.

Kyogle Council director of technical services Graham Kennett said the road was one of many across the local government area which warranted sealing, but there were no funds to do so.

Mr Kennett said when a road had more than 100 to 150 traffic movements a day it became cheaper to seal it than continue to maintain it as a dirt road.

However, there were many roads in Kyogle in the same situation.

"There is a deficit of works," he said.

"They aren't affordable but there is an expectation in the community that they should be done."

The council is currently working on its Asset Management plan which is expected to go on public exhibition in about two months time.
