Our Butturini claims a bronze

TWEED Shire residents are celebrating the medal-winning efforts of Australian Men's Hockey Team player and Burringbar boy Matthew Butturini.

The 25-year-old claimed his first Olympic Games medal at the weekend, as Australia led an all-out attack on Great Britain in the third place play-off.

The 3-1 victory gave Australia their fourth bronze medal finish from their past five Olympic Games appearances.

Despite the pressures of playing in front of the hosts' noisy home crowd, Australia secured the lead in the 18th minute and continued to dominate Great Britain in the second half.

It was a memorable victory for the Kookaburras, who will now need to focus on the 2014 World Cup.

Butturini was a key defender for the Kookaburras during their Olympic campaign, scoring three goals and extending Australia's lead during matches with Spain and South Africa.

The Tweed's only representative at the Games was supported by his family and girlfriend, who flew over to barrack for Matthew and his team mates.
