A Cooloola Cove man is also dead and his wife seriously injured after a single-car crash on the Bruce Hwy at Kybong (near Gympie) yesterday.

The crash happened about 2.30pm yesterday and police said the woman, 56, was airlifted to Nambour General Hospital. The man, 60, died at the scene.

The Gympie district's highest-ranking officer, Inspector Jon Lewis, pleaded with drivers yesterday "to pay attention" to what they were doing.

Imbil officer-in-charge Sgt Terry Kennedy attended the Kybong crash scene.

He said a northbound Mitsubishi Challenger driven by the Cooloola Cove woman went off the highway on a right-hand bend. The car crashed over a ditch and ploughed through roadside grass into a large tree.

It was the seventh fatal car crash in the Gympie Region in eight weeks, the fourth to occur on the highway
