On ride of his life to the USA

JACKSON Felton doesn't have time to consider the dangers when he jumps on the back of a one-tonne bull intent on making his ride as short as possible.

It is this fearless attitude displayed by the 17-year-old Trinity Catholic College student that has seen him qualify for the National High School bull-riding finals in the USA.

The Kyogle teenager said he qualified last weekend by riding three bulls in a National Rodeo Association event at Coonamble.

To help Jackson realise his dream he is looking for local businesses to help sponsor him so he can raise the $6000 needed to make this trip of a lifetime.

When he is preparing to sit on a snorting beast waiting to be unleashed in the ring, Jackson said he puts fear to the back of his mind.

"I go through my warm-up and do some stretches and think about the opportunity I will get if I win," he said.

"The fear is always there but you can't let it overcome you."

Jackson said he considered himself lucky he hadn't been seriously injured participating in such a dangerous sport.

"I have been very lucky; I have been jumped on a few times which made me think a bit, but I haven't been seriously injured.

Following in the footsteps of his father Lindsay, Jackson was introduced to rodeos at the tender age of six.

"My dad used to compete in rodeos a fair bit when I was growing up and I have always looked up to him and wanted to do it. I started participating in rodeos when I was six but I never really competed much. Then in 2010 I got stuck into it and made the NRA finals and then last year I made NRA finals again."
