On for young and old
THE YOUNGEST and the oldest DJs in the Northern Rivers are part of the line-up of presenters at NIM 102.3 FM Community Radio in Nimbin.
At 92 years of age, Uncle Len Harper and Livio Gulizia, just five years old, are the two extremes of the long list of DJs broadcasting 24 hours a day and seven days a week in Nimbin.
Livio's parents own a cafe across the road from Nim FM studios, so when he asked presenter Gail Clarke to show him the studio last September, she allowed him to present some songs he liked during her program.
Livio has become a regular co-presenter of Gail's program, the youngest member of the radio station, and "he is now reading to our listeners about dinosaurs and playing music he likes''.
The young DJ is gaining some valuable skills on correct use of the microphone and the way to sound deck, "and he just loves the fact that his mum listens to him every week," said Ms Clarke.
Gail Clarke's program is called "Absolutely Fabulous" and is on air every Monday morning for two hours.
"Livio comes to my show between 11.30am and 12pm on Mondays and he is learning to do the desk and talk on the microphone, and he loves it," she said.
Uncle Len's program has been on for more than a decade at the same radio station on Saturday afternoons for an hour.
His program is called "Uncle Len's Tall Stories" and includes some poetry and prose reading.
"He plays music from his generation and also tells quirky stories to amuse his listeners," Ms Clarke said.
"It is good to have people from all ages in community radio, because we are all volunteers and it is a great way to participate in this fabulous community," she said.
