Officer punched during wild brawl
A POLICE officer was assaulted during an alcohol fuelled brawl involving up to 30 people in Coffs Harbour's Vernon St at the weekend.
Officers today are said to be reviewing security footage captured on cameras outside the Ce.x Coffs in the hope of identifying the offenders.
Police said patrolling officers on the Pacific Highway saw a group of about 30 people gathered in a circle with about five people fighting in the middle around midnight.
Security staff from the nearby licensed club were attempting to intervene and stop the fighting, police said.
"Whilst Police were attempting to settle the matter down, a male has tried to start a fight with a small group of people, and this has sparked a further melee," police said.
"Police have deployed OC (capsicum) spray at some of the group to prevent a serious assault occurring.
"This group has also ignored police warnings prior to the spray being deployed and afterwards.
"Despite being sprayed, a male person has continued to assault another man and police have had to physically protect the victim.
"The aggressor in this incident has then run away through the crowd.
"Police were then surrounded by a number of males who took up fighting stances and threatened assault to police.
"Due to these actions and threats, OC spray was deployed at a number of males to prevent a violent confrontation.
"During this, a man has punched a police officer."
Police said other officers had to his aid and another male person was taken to the ground and detained.
The area was then cleared by police.
As a result of the incident a 20-year-old man from Sandy Beach and a 21-year-old man from Lennox Head were issued with a $500 criminal infringement notices for offensive behaviour.
Police are currently reviewing a large amount of evidence and CCTV footage and investigations into the matter are continuing with the view of identifying the persons involved in assaults on other persons and the police officers at the scene.
