REVEALED: Costs add up for Federal MPs

THE art of letter-writing may not be dead after all, judging by the list of expenses claimed by Federal MPs like Michelle Landry.

The Yeppoon-based MP claimed $1350 on 5000 personalised envelopes in the first six months of this year, which she is believed to have used to "correspond with constituents".

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton also opted for the letterhead emblazoned envelopes, however, he was able to lock in a much better deal, securing 50,000 envelopes for $1780, compared to Ms Landry's 5000 for $1350.

Last reporting period, Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen bought 30,000 for $605.

In a list of parliamentarians' expenditure from January 1 to June 30 this year, each of the region's federal politicians were shown to claim more than $100,000 on office administration, which in Ms Landry's case included personalised letterhead stationery.

Books including Get Parliament, Australian Democracy and the pocket constitution were also included in her $113,719.58 office administration claim. These books are believed to have been awarded to students who participated in a speaking competition while the Speaker of the House was visiting Rockhampton.

A further $1875 was spent on Australian flags.

However, this was eclipsed by Mr Christensen, who claimed back $2262.50 on Australian flags during the same period. While his list of reading material at the end of last year had included more than 20 titles such as "ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror", "Radical Islam Rising: Muslim Extremism in the West" and "Defying ISIS: Preserving Christianity in the Place of its Birth and in your own Backyard", he kept his expense claims to the local papers this reporting period.

His total office expenses were $100,067.45.

The most expensive offices in the state were headed by Karen Andrews who claimed $129,945.88, Theresa Gambaro who claimed $176,304.24, former MP Ewen Jones who claimed $115,799.64 and Keith Pitt who claimed $123,766.25.

Bob Katter spent the most on Australian flags, with his expense claim coming in at $11,238.25.

Ms Landry and Mr Christensen were unable to be contacted for comment.
