Offender's dog latches onto officer's leg in bizarre scene

A MAN was attacked with a knife and a dog bit a police officer in a bizarre series of events at Lawrence Boat ramp on Tuesday night.

According to police, about 9pm a 47-year-old man was seen taking his dog out on a boat.

"It seems he's actually somehow hurt the dog and come back to shore where he was met by concerned residents," a police spokesman said.

The man allegedly came off the boat with a large knife which he reportedly swung, hitting another man in his lower leg.

"It only caused an abrasion and didn't cut badly," the spokesman said.

The man allegedly returned to his boat only to return with another knife to attack the victim again.

"They got into a scuffle and some people came to the victim's aid and disarmed the man," the spokesman said.

"At that stage police arrived and while arresting the offender, the offender's dog has bitten one of the officer's legs."

The man was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and armed with intent and will appear at Grafton Local Court in its next sitting.

In other crime news, Riverside Care Bargain Centre in South Grafton was broken into on Tuesday night.

Thieves took an industrial fan, second-hand cameras and a sum of cash.
