Opinion: Ocean pool would boost Ballina tourism
THE Ballina Icebergs. It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
Imagine year-round swimming in a saltwater pool at Ballina.
There is a working group proposing just that at the southern end of Ballina's Shelly Beach.
The working group is hoping the knock on effect is that Ballina council will take it forward as going concern.
Should all the environmental factors be satisfied I think this is a great idea for Ballina.
It would certainly add to Ballina's growing reputation as a tourist destination and hot property in terms of sea changers looking to find the next seaside place to take off.
Ballina has some beautiful beaches and the right kind of population to potentially make an ocean pool a goer.
How cool would it be to have that little extra option when visiting Shelly Beach?
It would make a great alternative if the surf was too rough, or if there was a bad rip, or a bluebottle infestation.
It also makes a lot of sense given the shark activity in the region and would make nippers training a little easier and safer.
You could also have year-round swimming, as is the case at Sydney's famous Bondi Beach.
It would be much easier for the Ballina Icebergs to take a dip in the traditional iceberg winter swimming season (May through to September).
Club members would have to be made of stern stuff.
I'd note there is a pretty stringent regime required to become a Bondi Iceberg.
You have to train three out of four Sundays of every month for a period of five years before you qualify!
An ocean pool is a great idea for Ballina.
