Occarock offers the most ‘occa’ of rock
OCCAROCK is a band of locals who just love good Australian pub music.
The band features Dean Macaw from Ballina on lead guitar, Dale Cadwell from Casino on bass and lead vocals, and Mick Aarts from Evans Head on drums.
They call themselves 'therapy brothers' as they see their weekend gigs as a way to keep themselves happy by doing what they love.
Mr Aarts said their current show was a homage to iconic Australian bands such as Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel and AC/DC, with a broad range of mostly 1980s rock.
"We know roughly about 90 songs between hits and some more obscure tunes. We try not to play hit after hit - people get a bit sick of that," he said.
"We do less-known songs from hit bands, such as Solid Rock (1982) by Goanna."
The band was formed 11years ago after the band members realised they all wanted to play the pub-friendly music they loved.
Mr Aarts said playing those Aussie pub rock songs helped younger people and new Australians learn about the country's music heritage.
"I bumped into a South African fellow the other day. He's been living in Australia for about 15 years," he said.
"I met him through a business connection. He said our shows teach him about Aussie music."
