Oates grows into Broncos heavyweight

YOUNG Brisbane winger Corey Oates is trying to keep calm about the prospect of playing in Sunday's NRL grand final in Sydney after scoring a try in Brisbane's 31-12 win over the Roosters last Friday night.

"Sometimes I can't believe I am going to play in a grand final, but I just have to stay relaxed and wait for the game," he told APN.

Oates (pictured) admitted he had been caught up in the on-field emotion that flowed after the victory. "Yeah, there were a lot of boys who were pretty emotional," he said. "It was an unreal feeling at the time but now we have to enjoy the week ahead and prepare for the big game."

The 20-year-old from Biloela, who stands 192cm and weighs 107kgs, said he hadn't been a big kid growing up, but a sudden growth spurt turned him into a top rugby league prospect.

"I had a pretty big growth spurt at the end of grade nine," he said.

"I was never a tall kid, but that took me from the shortest to the tallest kid, although there was never much (weight) on me. I was like a stick."

Once he put some size on, the Broncos were quick to recognise his potential, signing him to a scholarship when he was 15.

He linked up with the six-time premiers soon after completing high school and made his debut in 2013 against Melbourne Storm as a raw-boned teenager.

At just 20 he has already played more than 50 NRL games, scoring 26 tries. And he hasn't finished growing yet, or found his eventual positional home which is likely to be as a running back-rower.

He is sure to have plenty of home-town support at the grand final with his parents Warren and Jannette, sister and grandparents having spent the past month planning the trip to Sydney.
