Nutty as a Frutopia cake
CALLS are out for entrants to register in the Aids Council Of NSW's (ACON) annual Frutopia bake-off at their family day fund- raiser next month.
This year there are four categories: Fun 'n Fruity, Creative Kids, Craving Chocolate and Corporate Cake Over for business and community organisations.
ACON health promotion officer, Tobin Saunders said organisers were encouraging people to get baking and “express their culinary creativity in the name of charity”.
“The money will go to ACON assisting the local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community,” Mr Saunders said.
Entries will have to be cooked no more than 48 hours before the contest but he said it was not too early to register and start planning.
The key conditions are that all ingredients must be listed, all entries must be edible, and all ingredients must be legal.
“We had about 15 to 20 entries last year for our first bake-off and it literally went off,” he said.
“We're hoping the competition will expand and rise like a good sponge.”
Lismore Workers Club has already registered in the Corporate Cake Over category.
“We haven't locked the judges in yet but let me say there will be some auspicious names with discerning tastebuds and sweet tooths at the ready,” Mr Saunders said.
“There will be fabulous prizes and the winners will be the pride of community.
"Unlike traditional agricultural shows, the cakes will not sit for days going mouldy but will eaten by the public as soon as judging is completed.
“Once the judging is done there will be a frenzy of eating, and if a plethora of amazing desserts isn't enough to get the punters along I don't know what will.
“It's a Tropical Fruits run event, and there will be plenty of stalls, fun for all the family, and just a beautiful chance for the community to come together in the winter sunshine.”
