More people playing soccer across Northern NSW

SOCCER continues to grow in Northern NSW, according to registration figures released yesterday.

Total participation in the sport across the seven member zones of Northern NSW for the 2014 season has reached 55,825, up 6.9% or 3604 players on last season.

It includes an increase in winter players of 4.07% to 47,234 and an increase in 'off-season' activities such as summer sixes with 8591 players.

The increase was also reflected in growth in referee and match official numbers to 887, up 7.1% on last year.

"We are confident that with the spotlight provided by the World Cup in Brazil and the upcoming AFC Asian Cup to be hosted in Australia in January 2015 the game will continue to grow," Northern NSW Football CEO David Eland said.

Detailed figures for the Far North Coast will be released at a media event in Lismore next Thursday.
