Number of asylum seekers is more than double from last year

MORE than 3000 asylum seekers have arrived in Australia by boat in the first three months of 2013, more than double the number for the same period last year.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare revealed on Tuesday two more boats had arrived on Monday.

Two Navy vessels were sent to help a boat carrying 105 people north-north-west of Christmas Island on Monday.

Later on Monday night a vessel north of Christmas Island with 83 people on board required assistance from ACV Ocean Protector and HMAS Maitland.

It came on the same day two people, including a small child, died after a boat carrying 95 people sank.

There were reports on Tuesday the three people injured in that incident were being treated in a Perth hospital.

Initial reports indicated only two people were injured.
