Naked driver fined $76
JONATHON JONES was jumping naked in front of oncoming cars on the Pacific Highway at New Italy when police, called to the scene, were forced to chase the nude driver after he jumped back in his car and sped north.
Jones, 22, a fitness instructor from Victoria Point south-east of Brisbane, was finally arrested in a violent struggle with police at Woodburn on October 1.
There was no evidence before the court that he had been drunk or on drugs at the time of his bizarre behaviour with police taking him immediately to Lismore Base Hospital for assessment. A mental health officer at the time found no mental health issues.
Jones in November pleaded guilty at Lismore Local Court to two counts of assaulting police officers and one count of resisting arrest.
He gave no explanation for his behaviour although his mother in evidence revealed he was acting strangely in the days before, fighting with his pastor father and jumping out of a window at their home and running off.
On Friday at Byron Bay Local Court he received a two year good behaviour bond for his potentially deadly naked highway antics.
Magistrate Nicholas Reimer ordered Jones to consult his GP and seek urgent medical assessment and referral to psychiatric and psychological consultation and if necessary treatment.
He was ordered to pay courts costs of $76.
