NT and NSW leaders discuss $1 billion gas pipeline

THE New South Wales and Northern Territory leaders have met in Sydney where they discussed a proposed $1 billion gas pipeline.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles told Sky News on Friday the Territory had stranded natural gas assets and wanted to develop them with the help of government and the private sector.

"They will bring infrastructure, roads, bridges, and telecommunications built and paid for by the private sector," he said.

"Many of those jobs will go to regional and remote Territorians who are longing to be part of the economy and do not have that opportunity for jobs.

"NSW is expected to see a downturn in its gas supply from 2017, feeling the strain from 2019, and the Northern Territory can meet its needs."

Expressions of interest will be released on November 13.

There are two proposed routes for the gas pipeline, 700km from Tennant Creek to Mt Isa in Queensland and the other a 1100km pipeline from Alice Springs to Moomba in South Australia.

The NT Government gave the proposal Major Project Status last month.
