NSW police warn of Australia Day crack down on drivers

CHRISTMAS holiday road penalties will be in place in New South Wales throughout the Australia Day weekend, police have warned.

Double demerit points will apply to drivers caught speeding, drinking and forgetting to buckle up.

Operation Safe Arrival commander, Assistant Commissioner Nick Kaldas, said police would be out in force to book rogue drivers before "they destroy their own lives, or worse yet, the lives of other innocent road users".

On the last Australia Day long weekend two people were killed.

Police charged 303 drink drivers, 3330 speeders and handed out 5639 traffic tickets.
