NSW Govt focuses on water storage

AN upcoming inquiry into NSW water storage is likely to look closely at four previously touted dams says the inquiry's head, NSW Upper House MP Rick Colless.

The inquiry will look at  the Lachlan River near Carcoar, Fish River near Oberon, Welcome Reef (Shoalhaven River) near Braidwood, and Mole River near Tenterfield.

Mr Colless, a Nationals MLC, is the chairman of the NSW Standing Committee on State Development which is conducting the inquiry.

Submissions to the inquiry remain open till August 31 and thus far none have been received about any diversion plans for the Clarence River.

He said about 70 submissions had been received so far and he expected both sides of the Clarence River diversion debate to be brought up although it "was not a focus" of the inquiry.

Mr Collis said a considerable amount of engineering works had been done on the previously touted, but never funded, dams and it made sense to build on those first.

He said it was notable that none of the dams on the radar where located on the state's "northern coastal rivers".
