NORTHERN Star reporter Ava Benny-Morrison has been named a finalist in the Young Journalist of the Year in the APN Editorial Awards.

The awards identify the greatest talents in the APN media group, which covers most of regional Queensland and the NSW North Coast.

Ms Benny-Morrison was nominated for her work covering a range of local issues, from the 2010 Federal election to the death in Byron Bay last year of Ben Donohoe.

She is one of three finalists contesting the award, the others being Bianca Box from the Gladstone Observer and Emily Prain from the Bundaberg NewsMail.

Ms Benny-Morrison received one of the top honours at this year's Northern NSW Journalism Awards (the Prodis) when she won the Tom Barrass Award for Regional Journalism for her series looking at the volunteers and emergency workers who have to deal with the aftermath of crashes on the deadly Pacific Highway.

Winners of the APN Editorial Awards are expected to be announced before Christmas.
