Northern rivers computer virus warning

A Northern Rivers business has been struck by one of the worlds most aggressive computer viruses.
The Ballina based company was hit by the Cryptolocker virus during the week. It took technical experts from Gooroo Technical Services more than 5 hours to clean the company's computer system of the virus.
The managing director of Gooroo Technical Services, Jason Binder, says the Cryptolocker virus is used by Russian hackers and targets business computers.
"The Cryptolocker virus moves all the files on the infected computer into an encrypted file for which it only has the key..
The hackers then send the computer's owner an email demanding money to unlock the file. In this case they demanded $300.
"The encryption the hackers use is better than the security used by banks so it is particularly difficult to clean, " says Jason.
"It's also a Trojan virus which most
virus killer software doesn't recognize yet, so it is difficult to prevent from infecting a system.
"We recommend computer users regularly back up their systems and maintain the latest virus killer software,
"But even with these precautions, Cryptolocker is a sophisticated and aggressive program which has netted the Russian hackers millions of dollars.
