Northern influx of teams to re-join the NRRRL
THREE clubs are expected to re-join the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League in 2015 with the possibility of a fourth.
Cudgen, Tweed Coast Raiders and South Tweed are all on board and likely to be part of the NRRRL.
Bilambil Jets should be the fourth club but do not want to leave the Gold Coast-Tweed competition.
Under the proposed Country Rugby League boundary restructure, all rugby league clubs in New South Wales are expected to play in NSW-based competitions.
The only exception is Tweed Heads Seagulls because the NRRRL can't provide a competition that's on equal footing to the Intrust Super Cup.
If Bilambil were to stay in the Gold Coast competition they would have to base themselves somewhere in Queensland at their own expense.
Club president Peter Rigney said the Jets were comfortable where they were and that supporters would not travel south for games.
The initial plan 12 months ago was for the NRRRL to be a 12-team competition by 2015 after there were only 10 teams this season.
NRRRL president Brian Rix is not opposed to bumping it up to 14 teams if Bilambil come on board.
"We need to do what's viable and best for every-one," Rix said.
"Cudgen have been keen for a while now and have indicated they will have all three grades while Tweed Coast and South Tweed will have first grade and under-18s."
Cudgen and Tweed Coast last played in the NRRRL in 2011.
Grafton Ghosts and South Grafton Rebels leaving NRRRL for Group Two at the end of 2013 opened the door for the Tweed teams to return.
Tweed Coast have been playing second division on the Gold Coast while South Tweed have been out of the first grade competition for four years.
"We want to put some strategies in place to make this a long-term thing," Rix said.
"The last thing we want is clubs coming in for a season and then pulling the pin.
"We're thinking about whether to do a two-year draw to lock everyone in for 2016 as well as a possible top eight system for semi-finals but nothing is set in stone yet."
More will be known after the NRRRL annual general meeting on November 10.
