NORTH Korea has launched an unidentified missile from its capital city, Pyongyang.

South Korea's military says the missile was launched eastwards.

Japanese authorities put out an emergency alert saying the missile flew over Hokkaido just after 8am AEST.

The missile is believed to have followed a similar trajectory as a weapon fired over Japan last month.

Japanese authorities said the missile landed in the Pacific Ocean about 2000km from Hokkaido, making the missile's trajectory about 3500km.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull condemned North Korea's latest missile test, saying it was a sign the regime is frustrated by tough new United Nations sanctions.

Mr Turnbull told Sky News on Friday the test was a sign sanctions were working.

"This is another dangerous, reckless, criminal act by the North Korean regime, threatening the stability of the region and the world," he said.

"We utterly condemn it... what we do need to do is maintain the united global pressure on this rogue regime to bring it to its senses."

The August 29 launch was roundly condemned by Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, US President Donald Trump and allies.

The launch follows the rogue nation's largest test of a nuclear weapon on September 3.

Sanctions against the rogue nation were announced this week.

South Korean and US militaries are analysing details of the launch.

South Korea's presidential Blue House has called an urgent National Security meeting following the launch.

The launch comes just a day after North Korea threatened to sink Japan and reduce the United States to "ashes and darkness" for supporting a UN Security Council resolution imposing the new sanctions.
