New season of Flickerfest launched

FLICKERFEST’S Bronwyn Kidd and Shane Rennie of Mullumbimby are about to launch the second season of their TV series, Flickerfest on Austar channel Movie Extra this Friday.

The show is an original series created through the partnership of the Academy Award-accredited local short film festival, Flickerfest, and the Austar channel, Movie Extra, that will feature a selection of both new and classic award-winning highlights from the festival.

“It’s great to have Movie Extra back on-board for 2010,” Mr Rennie said.

“This show is the first of its kind on Australian television and it is a great thing for up-and-coming filmmakers in Australia.”

The seven-part series is hosted by short-film enthusiast, actor and director, Damian Walshe-Howling from the Underbelly series and includes in-depth interviews with filmmakers and actors.

Movie Extra’s publicist Amanda Herbert promised the second expanded season would feature ‘more stars, more films and more passion for short film making’.

“Damian will take us behind-the-scenes once again to discover what it takes to conquer the art of short filmmaking and talks to high profile stars who have delved into this form,” she said.

“Deborra-lee Furness talks to Damian about her short film, Standing Room Only, starring Hugh Jackman; while Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett team up for short film, Bangers.

“Paul McDermott’s writing and directing is highlighted in The Girl Who Swallowed Bees and Camera D’or-winning film maker Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah) gives us the background to his work in the short film, Nana.”

Ms Herbert said the series will include interviews from the filmmakers and actors plus in-depth discussion with some of the biggest names in the business including multi- award winning director Bruce Beresford.

Viewers will also get an exclusive behind-the-scenes view of Flickerfest’s judging process ‘where cameras have previously feared to tread’, showing jury members getting into debates and deliberating behind the scenes of the judging process of Flickerfest.

Flickerfest will screen on Movie Extra every Friday at 10:30pm, with an encore screening on Sundays at 4pm.
