North Coast residents most carbon concious

RESIDENTS on the Far North Coast care more about the environment than anyone else in Australia.

That is what the latest figures from a new Jetstar program suggest.

Jetstar has just celebrated the first year of its Carbon Offset Program, which has saved tonnes of CO2 emissions and 28 million litres of water, enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool 11 times over.

The 'best offsetters' in Australia, with the greatest percentage of passengers choosing to offset their share of flight emissions, are those using the Ballina/Byron airport.

Hobart passengers came second, with Melbourne Avalon and Newcastle representing the third and fourth 'most offset' airports.

For domestic destinations, the Jetstar data showed the percentage of direct booking passengers choosing to offset their share of flight emissions.

Regional routes proved to be the most offset, while major capital city destinations were outside the top eight, despite a higher volume of flights per week.

The program was launched in September last year and customer take-up has exceeded Jetstar's expectations, with about 10 per cent of passengers booking via the website choosing to offset their share of flight emissions.

The funds raised by the program have been used to offer free environmental consultation to Australian homes, and equipped hundreds of households with energy-efficient light bulbs and water-efficient showerheads to reduce energy used to heat water and water-use footprints.

Jetstar chief executive officer, Bruce Buchanan, believes the success of the program has much to do with the ease with which passengers are able to offset their flight online. Other key achievements reached by the Enviro Saver Program (September 2007-June 2008) were:

  •  53,587 tonnes of CO2 offset.
  •  About 760 water-saving shower heads installed in Australian homes.
  •  About 65,650 power-saving light bulbs installed.
