EXPERIENCED Rural Fire Service crews from across our district remain on standby, ready to give their Victorian counterparts a helping hand.

Supt Matt Inwood, of the NSW Fire Service media unit, said six task forces including 30 tankers and six management staff had already been sent south from elsewhere in the State.

He said the final call for local volunteers would come this morning. Fire crews in Victoria were hoping for some relief as a southerly change worked its way across the state and into southern NSW, but Supt Inwood, who is also a Northern Rivers incident controller, said last night's change had done little to ease the horrendous conditions.

“There is a some drizzle but nothing dramatic enough to put a dent in that situation,” he said last night.

Weather for our corner today and tomorrow will be hot and sultry.
