Norrish makes most of wild conditions to seize Mal Classic

HEATH Norrish has claimed the prestigious open nine-foot division at the Byron Bay Malibu Classic.

It was a wild and windy finish to the three-day competition at Wategos Beach yesterday but Norrish made the most of the conditions to finish ahead of fellow Gold Coast surfer Joel Tilley and last year's winner Scott Channon.

There was some solace for Channon with the Lennox Head surfer taking out the over-30 men's division.

It was the 35th year that the event has been staged by the Byron Bay Malibu Club.

"We ended up with 152 surfers which was more than we expected," club secretary Ron Hughes said.

"There was some sensational surfing, I'd say the best I've seen here.

"It was wild and windy at the end but tremendous surfing in every division."

In other results, Roisin Carolan won the open women's nine-foot title, Ray Gleave won the loggers and open old mal division and Jye Whyatt won the junior boys' event.
