Child care centre vows to take unvaccinated kids

AN OPERATOR of 20 childcare centres across regional Queensland has promised to allow unvaccinated children into the centres.

The Churches of Christ Care operates centres in Buderim, Gin Gin, Maryborough, St George, Chinchilla, Hervey Bay and other places.

It is one of a rising number of childcare operators who say they will accept unvaccinated children, despite new laws that have come into force and halt the payment of the childcare rebate to parents of such children.

The rules also prevent childcare operators from bearing the additional cost, so although the children will be accepted at COCC centres, parents will have to pay the remainder - up to hundreds of dollars a week for some them.

Groups including the Law Council have voiced concern about the laws, which also stop some other Centrelink payments to parents of unvaccinated children.

COCC children, family and youth manager Jane Carter said the operator told parents of the decision this week.

She said while they welcomed all children, they "encouraged" families to vaccinate their children, and extra precautions would be taken to manage placements of immunised and non-immunised children.
