No Peter Slipper collusion: Clive Palmer

FORMER LNP life member Clive Palmer says he told party members not to pursue embattled Fisher MP Peter Slipper regarding the sexual harassment saga and denied bringing up the matter with Mal Brough and Joe Hockey.

Mr Palmer confirmed yesterday he met Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey, who was staying at the Palmer Coolum Resort with his family, and Fisher LNP candidate Mal Brough at about Easter time.

He said he could not recall discussing the Slipper saga at the largely social meeting but con ceded "a lot of matters were raised".

"There were other things we talked about like Julia Gillard ... and the colour of her hair was one thing we discussed and whether or not it was the right colour," he said.

Mr Palmer claimed he only found out about the claims against Mr Slipper in the media.

Mr Hockey recently denied addressing Mr Slipper's case at the meeting.

Mr Palmer left the LNP after he was suspended for a succession of attacks on the Newman Government.

The mining magnate said yesterday he had told LNP members not to pursue Mr Slipper.

"At no time did I ever encourage anybody to pursue Peter Slipper for any thing," he said.

"I have made it quite clear to all members of the LNP that as far as I was concerned Peter Slipper was innocent of any crime and should not be pursued."

Mr Palmer said knowing Mr Slipper for more than 30 years meant "you did not immediately jump to the conclusion his behaviour's out of kilter".

He added he had never seen Mr Slipper carry out any behaviour related to the accusations against him.

The Federal Court threw out Mr Slipper's former adviser James Ashby's sexual harassment claims last week.

Meanwhile, Mr Palmer has toned down speculation he would create his own political party after disappointing polling results.

Mr Palmer said polling of support for a potential Palmer-led party showed the move would gain only 34% of the vote.

"At 34% I can't see how we could have an impact on the nation," he said.
