Thumbs up to free ride for Saturday night ‘ClubHoppers’
UPDATE: Toowoomba has given a man's "crazy" New Year's resolution to run a free taxi service for Saturday night clubbers a massive thumbs up.
Kyle Wilkie, 22, will volunteer his time every Saturday night to offer free lifts in his custom-designed ClubHopper car to and from the CBD, from 8pm - 6am.
He says it is a way to save money and avoid going out.
Chronicle Facebook likers were impressed with Mr Wilkie's initiative, with more than 250 people giving the ClubHopper idea a thumbs up.
"I've thought about doing this myself, particularly for the females. Good on you Kyle," Yvette Adshead said.
"Well done mate," Andrew John Civil said.
"So proud of you Kyle, you are a good man and I hope it goes well for you," Jasmine Hay said. "I might need you in two weeks.
WEDNESDAY: You probably don't know Kyle Wilkie but he's happily volunteered to be your designated driver.
A New Year's resolution prompted Mr Wilkie, 22, to start ClubHopper, a free taxi service for revellers going out in Toowoomba on a Saturday night.
"I wanted to stop going out so much and spending so much money on alcohol and clubbing," he said.
"Now I had this extra money and thought I could put some of it into fuel and take people home.
"I don't know how it's going to go, but I know I wish it was around when I was going out."
In his custom-designed ClubHopper car, Mr Wilkie is offering lifts to and from the CBD, from 8pm - 6am, for free.
As it reads on the Facebook page - "free, no payment, no money required, nothing."
Friends think he's a "bit crazy" and he knows it sounds too good to be true, but the self-appointed chauffeur said the service was win-win.
"It helps keep me out of trouble and also provides a public service. It's also a great chance to meet people."
"Whenever something is free, people jump to conclusions.
"I've tried to make it as public as I can so people don't think it's this shady underground thing. The more people who know about it the better.
"It's a legitimate service for people to get home without getting behind the wheel after drinking or having to pay for a taxi.
"People don't have to use it if they're concerned."
Mr Wilkie created a Facebook page for ClubHopper on Monday afternoon and was hoping to start this weekend.
"I'm not really sure what to expect," he said.
