Micra and Pulsar hatch victims as Nissan culls model line-up

AUSTRALIA'S dwindling love affair with the micro car has claimed another victim, with Nissan's Micra the latest to get the chop.

Nissan has decided there is no longer an adequate business case for offering Micra for sale on the Australian market, meaning the city car segment is looking increasingly barren with the likes of Volkswagen's Up, Smart's ForTwo and Fiat's Panda all other recent withdrawals from our shores.

The news comes as Micras have enjoyed something of a sales surge of late, the baby Nissan nearly the segment leader (behind Mitsubishi's Mirage) with more than 500 units sold thanks to drive away offers of $12,990 for a manual Micra and $14,790 the automatic.

Nissan is also culling its aging diesel-powered Y61 Patrol wagon and UY61 Patrol cab chassis, which were succeeded by the Y62 Patrol V8 petrol offering that launched here in February 2013.

The end is also nigh for Nissan's Pulsar five-door hatch models, with the Japanese car maker saying it will concentrate solely on Pulsar sedan models for Australia instead.

"These decisions are in line with our commitment to running a robust business in Australia, led by strong products including Qashqui, X-Trail and Navara," said Nissan Australia MD and CEO Richard Emery.

Nissan said the discontinued models would remain on sale at its dealerships across Australia, and it expected the remaining stock to sell out by the latter part of this year.
