Nippers back in water
NIPPERS season officially started at Ballina and Lennox Head yesterday with a string of upcoming carnivals on the Far North Coast heading into the summer months.
The Lennox Head club is up in numbers this season and had competitors from Under-8s through to Under-14s on the beach and across the road at Lake Ainsworth.
"They did some swimming in the lake and today was a bit of an introduction for what's to come,” youth activities co-ordinator Sam Miller said.
"There are plenty of kids here today despite the rain and ordinary weather.
"We're lucky that we have the lake as back-up when the surf conditions aren't great.
"We had 150 already signed on before today and we're looking at well over 200 now.
"They've all met their age managers and been given their rash shirts for the season.”
Niamh Sharpe won a gold medal in the Under-9 board race at the NSW Surf Life Saving Champion- ships on the Central Coast last season.
Miller believes Lennox Head will have a decent squad heading into the bigger carnivals in coming months.
"We got our first state medal in about five years last season and that was really pleasing,” Miller said.
"Some of our kids have been training since August and have excelled in a couple of enduro events here and on the Gold Coast.
"They're back training for the short-course now and the kids are on track for some really good results this year.”
