Nipperess ready to end his long wait
IT'S been 22 years since Kevin Nipperess claimed his second Ballina Cup and he would 'dearly love' to make it three.
The Ballina-based trainer last tasted success in 1987 with Silver Magnum, which then went on to claim the Ballina-Lismore Cup double with the late Iris Nielsen onboard.
Nipperess has entered All Our Way in today's race and says the well-credentialed gelding is ready.
“I've had him for about six months and he has come from Hong Kong where he has raced and won the equivalent of about $400,000,” Nipperess said.
“He has a real chance. His previous two runs have been at Eagle Farm and Doomben and his form is right for this.”
Nipperess won Ballina Cups with Silver Magnum and Eshowee in 1978 and has lost count of the seconds he's had.
“I would dearly like to win another Ballina Cup,” he said. “I've won a Lismore Cup, a Murwillumbah Cup and it would be great to win three Ballina Cups.”
His only gripe is that the race, at 1600m, is not long enough.
“All the cups to me over the years have seen the winner go past the post twice,” he said.
