Nine-year-old nabs 9.9kg barra on Good Friday

NOTHING says Good Friday more than fish and selflessness.

Kevin Whittington and his nine-year-old son Josiah managed to capture both last week.

Josiah hooked a 9.9kg barramundi at the Quay St wharf near Flamingos Nightclub on Friday.

Kevin said his son played it for about 10 minutes before handing over the lightweight rod.

"It was pretty exciting," Kevin said.

"It was so big. Then it jumped out of the water and we got to see it."

Kevin said it was a bit of a struggle, but evenutally he reeled the 95cm fish in.

He said fishing was a bit of a family hobby.

"We went to catch some for fun," he said.

"So we decided whatever we caught we would give away."

Kevin, who is a pastor at the Oasis New Life Centre in Rockhampton, said they gave the whopper to one of his colleagues at the Gracemere chapter, Pastor Nathan Jones.

He said Nathan was holding a church barbecue soon and the fish would easily feed 50 people.
