Nimbin's 'Academy Awards' to be bigger and better

IN FRONT of the big screen, and behind the camera, mayor of Lismore Jenny Dowell hands Darmin Cameron, organiser of the Nimbin Youth Film Festival, the funds to ensure NYFF 2016 will be bigger and better.

NYFF 2016 and their auspice body the Nimbin School of Arts were successful in the 2016/17 Lismore City Council's Community Grants Funding round.

Mayor Dowell has presented the awards every year since the inaugural event in 2010.

The Screening and Awards Ceremony is held in the Nimbin Town Hall, with a big screen, a big sound and a big audience.

For a young filmmaker this is like Hollywood's Academy Awards. Films from past years can be seen on the festival's You Tube channel. All the winners from 2015 are uploading as you read this. (Like the Nimbin Youth Film Festival's Facebook page to receive notifications of the latest upload.)

The films are astonishing; audience's are always delighted and sometimes blown away! Films entered always give great insight into the minds and thinking of young people of the times. Adults can be educated as well as entertained.

Judges Jeni Dell and Paul Tait from Gaia Films have over sixty years between them in the Australian Film Industry and bring all that experience to bear in selecting the winners. It is a tough job, with most times one point between the top prize-winners.

The Festival hasn't officially opened for entries, but films take time, so if you are a young person or know and want to encourage one, get cracking. It takes a Film Crew to make a film, NYFF encourages young people to get friends, adults and professionals involved to help and support them. As long as the young person is the director and it is their idea and the film is no more than of twelve minutes in length, go for it.

Call for entries will be announced soon and the Awards Ceremony will be in late November.
