Nimbin raid nets $730k drug crop

POLICE have seized $730,000 worth of high-grade, mature cannabis plants from a hydroponically equipped rural property near Nimbin.

It was an early morning start yesterday for police officers attached to the Richmond Target Action Group who descended on a Zouch Rd property at 7am.

On the two-dwelling property, police found two sophisticated indoor hydroponic cultivation rooms containing 103 cannabis plants.

A further 159 cannabis plants were located on the property.

Fifty-one grams of cannabis resin and 186 grams of cannabis were also seized.

Richmond Local Area Command crime manager Detective Acting Inspector Paul Fredericks said the cannabis had a potential street value of $730,000.

He said some of the mature plants were very high quality.

"Whenever we do drug seizures, I believe it impacts in some way, in relation to the availability of drugs on the streets," he said.

"Police from the Richmond Target Action Group continue to achieve positive results for the community of Nimbin and the Northern Rivers by preventing the potential for significant quantities of illicit drugs reaching the streets."

A 46-year-old male was home during the raid and subsequently arrested.

He was charged with a number of drug-related offences including enhanced cultivation of a prohibited plant for commercial purposes and possession of cannabis.

He was formally refused bail to appear in Lismore Local Court later this month.

Three other males aged 49, 47 and 26 years of age from the Zouch Road property were interviewed and charged with possession of cannabis. All three will appear Lismore Local Court today.
