Nike's days on the run end

BALLINA escapee Nike Buchanan has been recaptured by police in the Illawarra region following a joint operation between Richmond and Lake Illawarra local area commands.

Buchanan, 22, escaped from Ballina police station while awaiting a court appearance in November last year, prompting a region-wide manhunt after a public appeal from police.

Following a tip-off, detectives from Lake Illawarra surrounded a house in Lake Heights about 7.30am yesterday, arresting Buchanan after being allowed access by the residents.

He was taken to Port Kembla police station where detectives executed the cancellation of his parole warrant.

Buchanan was charged with breaking parole and escaping custody and still faces the original charges of stealing, and break and entering. He was refused bail and ordered to appear before the Wollongong Local Court yesterday.
