Throughout the world, ceremonies are held commemorating something special. These rituals signify the importance of a situation according to religious, spiritual or traditional beliefs and customs. Ceremonies have always had a place of special importance in society and can help define a culture giving groups of people or individuals a sense of who they are.

Ceremonies are part and parcel of our society, marking significant moments in our lives, for example, birthday, graduation, retirement, death, marriage.

Some ceremonial performances are seen as the core of cultural life and may have a physical display or theatrical component including a song, dance or procession. Ceremonies may include observances based on religion or political organization most of which are steeped in symbolism helping to put more understanding and meaning into lives.

The concept or idea around which a ceremony is built may differ but ultimately the reason is the same - to recognise the significance of an occasion.
