Newton charged over alleged assault

UNDERBELLY actor Matthew Newton has been charged after he allegedly punched a 66-year-old taxi driver on the head.

Police will allege the incident occurred after the troubled actor hailed a cab in Crows Nest at 10.20am on Sunday, December 4.

Newton, 35, is alleged to have become aggressive towards the driver and then assaulted him.

When the driver stopped and demanded Newton leave his taxi it is alleged the actor assaulted the driver again.

Police  said today that Newton had been charged with two counts of assault and is expected to appear in North Sydney Local Court on January 31.
