New Orleans in spirit and music in Nimbin

NIMBIN'S trumpet player and singer Cameron Smith has been honing his set of almost-traditional jazz and New Orleans-inspired originals for more than a decade.

In The Magnificence, he's finally found a gang of all-star Aussie musicians that can do the tunes justice.

The Magnificence are Smith on trumpet and vocals, Julian Smith on double bass and Lachi Smith on percussion.

A passion for New Orleans-inspired jazz means The Magnificence are not your average jazz band.

New Orleans' trademark is raw street jazz, played by the people as a defiant response to the hardships of the world. Jazz is a meeting of the essences and emotions of many cultures. When many flavours combine to make a new taste that is greater than the sum of its spices, we call it gumbo.

Just like jazz, nobody makes gumbo like they make it in New Orleans. Traditional gumbo will be on the menu for the group's concert.
