New medico in rehab

BALLINA Hospital's Rehabilitation Unit has welcomed a new practitioner to its team.

Doctor Ulla Gerich-McGregor brings new skills and experience to the Ballina Rehabilitation Unit.

Dr Gerich-McGregor was born in the South of Germany, near Lake Constance, where she completed her basic medical studies.

She then completed an orthopedic fellowship in 1999 in Switzerland.

The medico has also completed further skilling in Australia in the last 12 years.

"I did a complete retraining in the last six years in rehabilitation medicine. I did a consulting job in Brisbane last year and applied for this job last January," explained the specialist.

Dr Gerich-McGregor will assist with the work done by the Ballina team, such as rehabilitation from hip and knee replacement.

The team also assists rehabilitation from strokes and reduced mobility due to severe illness or surgery.

New skills that the new medico brings to the team are in brain injury rehabilitation and in prosthetics.

She is replacing Dr Hugh Fairful-Smith.

Dr Fairful-Smith will be moving to a new full-time position at Lismore Base Hospital.

"I'll be providing more geriatric services there", he explained.
