New fleet of trains promised to replace ageing XPT fleet

A RE-ELECTED NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will deliver a brand new fleet of trains to replace the ageing XPT fleet, Lismore MP Thomas George has said.

"This is fantastic news for our community and means faster travel times, improved comfort and better reliability on regional train services," Mr George said.

"We all know the current XPT trains are getting close to their use-by-date and have dropped below the standards people would expect from long-distance train travel around the world.

"Regional NSW is no longer going to put up with second-rate trains.

"The new trains will be state-of-the-art with modern and comfortable seating, dining, sleeping and entertainment options, including the potential for WIFI. They will also include enhanced security and better access for the elderly and people with a disability.

"The trains will travel at faster speeds so we could see significant travel savings.

"The government will also investigate putting maintenance facilities for the new trains outside Sydney to support local jobs."

If re-elected, procurement for the new trains will begin in the next term of government.
