CQUniversity Australia has today announced the appointment of Gladstone industry leader John Abbott as the University's new Chancellor.

This news follows the announcement that current Chancellor Rennie Fritschy will retire in March 2016 after more than a decade in the role.

Mr Abbott has long been connected with the University and its related entities over the past 30 years, first as a tutor at the then Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education and most recently as a member of the CQUniversity Council.

Professionally, Mr Abbott is an engineer and has held a number of senior management and corporate governance positions across industry sectors including power, oil and gas, minerals processing, mining, chemicals and engineering services. .

His career has seen him work all over the world in places such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, USA, Europe and the Middle East.

Outgoing CQUniversity Chancellor Rennie Fritschy explained that Mr Abbott's strong knowledge of and connection with the University, as well as his professional experience, made him the ideal candidate for the role of Chancellor.

"Over the years, John has shown his dedication to the University and during his tenure on the University Council has contributed to the University's current success," Mr Fritschy said.

"He is passionate about the University's continued growth and the student experience, and is deeply committed to ensuring the University continues to achieve its 'Strong to Great' vision.

"Importantly, John is extremely enthusiastic about playing a lead role in making sure CQUniversity emerges as one of Australia's truly great universities in the years ahead.

"John is also passionate about the role universities play in the advancement of regional communities. As part of this, John has a strong interest in community and industry engagement, and creating valuable long-term partnerships which will contribute to our success as a university.

"I have great confidence in handing over the role of Chancellor to someone of John's remarkable calibre and character," said Mr Fritschy.

John Abbott will be officially installed as the third Chancellor of CQUniversity at a ceremony to be held in March 2016.

CQUniversity is Australia's most engaged university and is also the Nation's largest regional university with more than 35,000 students and 23 delivery sites across Australia.
