New Ballina Players show is from a forbidden planet

BALLINA Players’ stage will explode with light and sound as Captain Tempest’s spaceship hits a meteor shower and is drawn irrevocably towards the forbidden planet D’Illyria.

What happens next is the subject of the Ballina theatre group’s 1960s rock’n’roll scifi musical extravaganza Return to the Forbidden Planet.

All the classic 1950s and 1960s hits such as Shake, Rattle and Roll, Pretty Woman and Who’s Sorry Now are featured.

The whole stage comes to life as one huge spaceship blasting out a compilation of rock and roll greats.

The story goes that a damaged spaceship is forced to land on a forbidden planet. There the visitors find Prospero, the mad scientist (Graeme Speed), his spirit robot on roller skates, Ariel (Josh Green), and his beautiful daughter Miranda (Jamaika Smith).

Miranda falls in love with the chisel-jawed Captain Tempest (Brian Pamphilon, Best Male Actor in a Musical at the 2015 Gold Coast Theatre Awards).

Return to the Forbidden Planet has humour, fun, scifi, adventure, special effects, a love story told largely through red hot rock classics, a magic potion and frightening space monster.

Event

Return to the Forbidden Planet, directed by Clem and Shelly Halpin, will be staged at the Players Theatre from June 17 to July 3. Evening performances at 8pm and matinees at 2pm.
