Neal crowned best longboard surfer in Australia

SAPPHIRE Beach longboard star Jared Neal covered himself in glory at the 2013 Australian Longboard Titles in Port Macquarie.

The finals were held in clean one-to-two foot wave at North Haven and Neal was the pick of the crop picking up the national championship.

To add to his victory in the Open Mens division, Neal also finished on the podium in the logger section when he finished second behind the Gold Coast's Clinton Guest.

The highly contested Open Mens final saw the four finalists trading long waves and with each competitors' two-wave totals scoring in excess of 12 points.

All efforts to stop Neal from claiming victory ultimately fell short when the Sapphire star locked in a 9.90 and a 9.75, the highest heat total of the event.

Neal also took out the Nikon Wave of the Day award for his 9.90 ride.

Other local surfers to shine at the national titles included the Emerald Beach pair of John Schmidenberg (4th in over-40s) and Glenn Mahoney (2nd in over-55s).

Sawtell's Richard Smith also impressed against the best in the country when he finished 2nd in the over-50s section.
